Curved Wilkinson Combiner
This example demonstrates how to layout a curved Wilkinson divider.

It uses schematic equations to calculate the radius of the curves formin=
g the loops so that they remain closed during tuning and optimization.

Try using the tuner to change the lengths and widths of the transmission=
lines, and watch how the layout and S-parameters update (hint: hold down t=
he Ctrl key to see the layout update as you tune). As saved, the per=
formance of the combiner is poor so that you can tune or optimize to see th=
e improvement. Tuning is effective to give you a feel for how parameters af=
fect performance. However, many times you want to change several values to =
achieve some simulation goal, this is where you should use optimization.
Implementation Details
The layout was constructed using the MCURVE element with equations that =
determine the radii of the curves given the width and lengths of the micros=
trip lines. The TFR2 resistors uses hard-coded model a layers for layout. T=
hese layers must be correctly mapped to drawing and EM layers for display a=
nd EM simulation. Refer to the TFR2 element help for more details.
Displaying Variable Values
The value of any equation can be displayed easily by adding an equation =
and typing in a variable name followed by the ":" character. Please see the=
schematic near the equations to see the the evaluated values for each vari=
able is displayed. To update evaluated values on the schematic, choose S=
imulate > Update Equations or hit F6 .
Optimization
Most of the optimizers will work well on this project. Try the Pointe=
r - Robust, Pointer - Gradient, Simplex Optimizer, or Random (Local) . S=
tart the optimizer by selecting Simulate > Optimize (or hit the <=
b>F7 key). The Optimizer dialog box will open. Select the optimi=
zer type from the Optimization Methods drop down and set the Maxi=
mum Iterations . Select the Show all iterations check box and the=
n click the Start button. You can stop the optimization at any time.=
Before optimizing, it is suggested to tile all windows (select Window &=
gt; Tile Vertical or Window > Tile Horizontal ) so you can see=
the optimization progress on all open windows. Watch the layout change and=
graphs change as the optimzation progresses, and in the Optimizer w=
indow watch as the Cost value continues to decrease. Once the optimi=
zation has ended, click the Round button to round the variables to a=
fixed number of significant digits, then Select All in the layout a=
nd Snap Together if needed.
EM Extraction
This Wilkinson Combiner schematic is setup for AXIEM extraction. This ex=
ample will not cover the basics of how extraction works. Please refer to th=
e User's Guide or other extraction examples to understand these concepts.=

First Freeze the traces in both the graphs from the menu by choosing =
Graph > Freeze Traces so you can compare the Axiem results vs schema=
tic results. Enable the EXTRACT block in the Wilkinson schema=
tic and simulate. This will simulate the entire layout of Wilkinson schemat=
ic in the EM structure named EM_Extract_Wilkinson and use the EM res=
ults back in the schematic. You can also toggle this block on and off to se=
e the results with and without extracting this part of the design.
