Amplifier Phase Noise
This project demonstrates how to add phase noise to the input signal of =
an amplifier, and how to measure phase noise at its output.
Overview
A set of equations are provided to set up parameters that define the inp=
ut. The amplifier's input signal is then constructed by mixing two tones, a=
nd filtering the result. Graphs show the input and output phase noise, and =
the difference between the two. The amplifier model can be replaced by any =
amplifier subcircuit for analysis.
Amp_Test
In this schematic, the main user settings are specified with equations o=
n the schematic: center frequency (FC), center frequency power (FC_PWR), th=
e IF filter bandwidth (BW), and the phase noise mask (Phase_Noise_Freq_Offs=
et and Phase_Noise_Amplitude).
The input signal is constructed by mixing two tones, and filtering the r=
esult:
PORT_FN : sinusoidal input at the desired power level, but at a fr=
equency of 0.8*FC
OSC_W_PH_NOISE : sinusoid at FC/5, with the desired phase noise ma=
sk
The mixer is fully linear for any reasonable power level. The filter ens=
ures the input to the amplifier is a single tone with the desired phase noi=
se mask. The filter's bandwidth, BW, should be wider than the range of the =
phase noise mask, but less than FC.
Noise meters measure noise at the input and output of the amplifier, whi=
ch is a behavioral nonlinear model, NL_AMP , and can be replaced by a=
nother amplifier as a subcircuit. The NLNOISE block sets the phase n=
oise measurement range to be the same as the input mask.
Phase Noise
This graph shows the phase noise before and after the amplifier. Note th=
at the input phase noise matches the mask defined in the FREQUENCY and Phas=
e Noise parameters in the OSC_W_PH_NOISE element.
Phase Noise Amp Delta
This graph shows the result of output equations that calculate the diffe=
rence between the amplifier's output and input phase noise amplitude in dB =
(i.e. the phase noise contribution from the amplifier in dB).
Spectrum
This graph shows the spectrum at the input of the amplifier (verifying t=
hat the input frequency is correct and harmonics are kept to a minimum), an=
d at its output.
