Design Notes
ON - OFF Keying
This example shows a complete ON - OFF Keying system in VSS.
OOK has equivalent BER performance with coherent binary FSK. For both:
BER = Pb(e) = Q(sqrt(Eb/No)).
So, we use AWGN set at "Bit energy, dBm", and we set it to
PWR = 10 - 3 - EbNo.
This is because the transmitted symbol has amplitude 1.0 (so 10dBm), but the average bit energy Eb is 1/2 of that, since on the average 50% of the transmitted symbols are zeros.
Therefore, the average transmitted Eb is 7dBm, and of course the noise density per bit needs to be set to:
7 - EbNo.
In fact, one can observe that BER aligns with the theoretical result for coherent binary FSK.
The "Integrate and Dump" is needed, as it is the Matched Filter receiver for this OOK transmission scheme.
The Waveforms at various places in the system are shown in "WAVEFORMS" Graph and the "BER" Graph shows the theoretical curves for Coherent FSK, BPSK and real time OOK BER.
