For example see the shape below that has been double clicked to shown the vertices and mid-points. When holding down the Ctrl key, the mouse will snap to one of these points as you get near it. Notice the bottom right vertex in this example. This is very useful when aligning shapes. See these two shapes that should be aligned on the edge. To easily align them, select the left shape. Hold down Ctrl and click and drag on one of the vertices along the right side of the shape. Keep Ctrl held down and the cursor will snap to a vertex on the 2nd shape as you draw towards. Release the mouse when there and the shapes will be perfectly aligned.
