Design Notes
Pyramid Horn Antenna
In this example, a pyramid horn antenna is analyzed using Analyst and the AWR 3D Editor to demonstrate antenna measurements.
Overview
This project uses the 3D solid structure for one quarter of a pyramid horn antenna fed by a waveguide section. 2D and 3D far field radiation patterns are displayed.
Description of Analyst Antenna Measurements
The primary purpose of this example is to demonstrate full 3D FEM analysis of a waveguide fed pyramid horn antenna at 10 GHz using one-quarter symmetry boundary conditions. The 3D radiation pattern using an Antenna_3D annotation and Total Power Radiation Pattern with two azimuth angle cuts are setup for display. Other available measurements include Axial Ratio Radiation Pattern and E-Field Radiation Pattern. For each measurement, it is possible to sweep frequency, Phi, or Theta. For information on a specific measurement, select the Meas Help button in the Modify Measurement dialog.
Setup
The antenna begins as an Arbitrary 3D Structure in Microwave Office and then the AWR 3D Editor is used to build the full-size 3D parts. One face of the WR90 waveguide feed is "loft"ed to complete the horn. The material properties, boundary conditions for the perfectly conducting walls of the horn, Perfect E and Perfect H symmetry conditions and the 2D port feed are setup in the 3D Editor.
Significant Project Settings
• Port impedance for the WR90 waveguide feed is set to 500 ohm
• Field Polarization in the 3D annotation for antenna far fields is set to "Total"
• Electromagnetic field outputs are explicitly saved and antenna far fields are enabled (the default is the opposite for both)
